The city is not far from the state border with Thuringia in the valley of the Biberbach. The city was first mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 9th century in the register of the goods of the Hersfeld Monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus († 786) of Mainz. There she is referred to as Bibraho. During the 1848 revolution (German Revolution 1848/49), the city was one of the most important rebellion areas in Prussian Thuringia (province of Saxony). The former Bibra has been allowed to call itself Bad Bibra since 1925. In the 19th century, bathing tourism flourished again. The name of the city comes from the Slavic (Lochow, Lochowo, Luchow, Luchowe, Luchowa, Luchonwe, Lachaw, Lauchau and Luchau, Laucha) and means something like swampy terrain or swampy meadowland .
