The Unstrut, navigable since the Middle Ages, was once the center of trade. At the beginning of the 9th century, Bibra was first mentioned as Bibraho in a list of the goods of the Hersfeld Monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus of Mainz († 786). The town has been called Bad Bibra since 1925, after bathing tourism had increased in the 19th century. Worth mentioning is the town church of St. Marien, a late Gothic building from the 15th century with Romanesque remains (block frieze on the south-east side of the church).
