The city is located in the valley of the Biberbach near the state border with Thuringia. In 1848, the city was one of the most important rebellion areas in Prussian Thuringia (Province of Saxony) during the revolution (German Revolution 1848/49). At the beginning of the 9th century, Bibra was first mentioned as Bibraho in a list of the goods of the Hersfeld Monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus of Mainz († 786). The town has been called Bad Bibra since 1925, after bathing tourism had increased in the 19th century. Worth mentioning is the town church of St. Marien, a late Gothic building from the 15th century with Romanesque remains (block frieze on the south-east side of the church).
