The first mention of the city at the beginning of the 9th century is in a list of the goods of the Hersfeld Monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus († 786) of Mainz. Her name there is Bibraho. Worth mentioning is the town church of St. Marien, a late Gothic building from the 15th century with Romanesque remains (block frieze on the south-east side of the church). During the 1848 revolution (German Revolution 1848/49), the city was one of the most important rebellion areas in Prussian Thuringia (province of Saxony).
