The 1112 meter long city wall surrounds the historic city center and is still well preserved with one of the three gates that used to be there. The city was one of the most important rebellion areas in Prussian Thuringia (province of Saxony) during the 1848 revolution (German Revolution 1848/49). The former Bibra has been allowed to call itself Bad Bibra since 1925. In the 19th century, bathing tourism flourished again. The Unstrut, navigable since the Middle Ages, was once the center of trade. The state border with the Free State of Thuringia runs not far from the city. The city lies on the beaver creek.
