Worth mentioning is the town church of St. Marien, a late Gothic building from the 15th century with Romanesque remains (block frieze on the south-east side of the church). In 1848, the city was one of the most important rebellion areas in Prussian Thuringia (Province of Saxony) during the revolution (German Revolution 1848/49). The first mention of the city at the beginning of the 9th century is in a register of the goods of the Hersfeld monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus of Mainz († 786). Her name there is Bibraho. The sights include the town hall from 1543 with the double-barreled, covered outside staircase that was added later and old portals on the town houses.
