The city was first mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 9th century in the register of the goods of the Hersfeld Monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus († 786) of Mainz. There she is referred to as Bibraho. The small town of Bad Bibra is located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt and is a state-approved resort. Worth mentioning is the town church of St. Marien, a late Gothic building from the 15th century with Romanesque remains (block frieze on the south-east side of the church). The former Bibra has been called Bad Bibra since 1925, after bathing tourism flourished again in the 19th century.
