The name of the town comes from the Slavic language and refers to the former swamping of the Unstrut area. At the beginning of the 9th century, Bibra was first mentioned as Bibraho in a list of the goods of the Hersfeld Monastery, built by Archbishop Lullus of Mainz († 786). Laucha an der Unstrut is a former street village and is located on the old Langensalza-Freyburg-Merseburg military road. During the German Revolution of 1848/49, the city was one of the most important rebellion areas in Prussian Thuringia (Province of Saxony). In the 19th century, bathing tourism flourished again, and since 1925 the former Bibra has been called Bad Bibra.
