The city is not far from the state border with Thuringia in the valley of the Biberbach. The sights include the town hall from 1543 with the double-barreled, covered outside staircase that was added later and old portals on the town houses. The 1112 meter long city wall surrounds the historic city center and is still well preserved with one of the three gates that used to be there. The name of the city comes from the Slavic (Lochow, Lochowo, Luchow, Luchowe, Luchowa, Luchonwe, Lachaw, Lauchau and Luchau, Laucha) and means something like swampy terrain or swampy meadowland . Worth mentioning is the town church of St. Marien, a late Gothic building from the 15th century with Romanesque remains (block frieze on the south-east side of the church).
